When we started **learn a new language**, as it could be the French language or English, one of the first things to be very clear is **the numbers**. Therefore, today we are going to see how they are written, how they are pronounced and some extra exercises so that you can practice. In addition, we have prepared a **very catchy song** in which a native French person sings the numbers from 1 to 20. Are you ready? Have a good coffee and… let's get started!

## How to write numbers in French

In this first section we have lists some very useful tables in which you can see the number itself on the far left, how it is written in French in the central column and, finally, how it is written in Spanish in the last column.

### Del 1 al 20

Number | in French | in Spanish |
---|---|---|

1 | un | a |

2 | deux | of |

3 | trois | three |

4 | quatre | four |

5 | cinq | five |

6 | six | six |

7 | sept | seven |

8 | huit | eight |

9 | neuf | nine |

10 | dix | diez |

11 | onze | once |

12 | douze | sweet |

13 | treize | thirteen |

14 | quatorze | catorce |

15 | quinze | fifteen |

16 | seize | sixteen |

17 | dix-sept | diecisiete |

18 | dix-huit | eighteen |

19 | dix-neuf | nineteen |

20 | vingt | veinte |

As we can see, the first twenty numbers are quite similar to Spanish. The main thing to remember from this section is that until the sixteenth, **equality is maintained**. Later, it is simpler, since 17, 18 and 19 are formed by joining the **diez** (*dix*) and the corresponding number. In this way, respectively: dix-sept, dix-huit and dix-neuf.

100 | cent | one hundred |

French numbers from 1 to 100 have **some nuances that should be remembered**. As we can see, when it ends in 1, the famous *and*, in this way 21 is said **twenty one**, 61 is said **soixante et a**, etc. The rest of the numbers are formed in the logical way, the only thing is that you have to join them with a hyphen. Thus, 68 is 60 + 8, that is, *soixante-huit*. All this that we are counting is the general rule for the numbers from 20 to 60. As we will see next, the numbers 70, 80 and 90 are special.

There is no direct translation of the *setenta* in French. It is formed in a very mathematical way, since 70 = 60 + 10, then the **Number seventy in French is soixante-dix**. The number 80 follows the same mathematical basis since 80 = 4 * 20, then eighty is said *eighty*. Finally, 90 becomes the same as seventy because: 90 = 80 + 10. Then, ninety is quatre-vingt-dix. For intermediate numbers such as 75 or 84, the rule of the script in the previous paragraph is followed. For example, seventy-five would be soixante-fifteen and eighty-four would be quatre-vingt-quatre.

### Del 1 al 1000

If you are interested in seeing a number greater than 100, we have prepared a table with numbers up to 1000 in French, as it would take up a lot of space on the screen, we have prepared a PDF with the table and the rest of the article to print.

### Cardinals

On the other hand, we also have the **Cardinal numbers**, which indicate **cardinality**. That is, the number of items. For example, if you want to say that you have *of
* pens, you use the cardinal numbers, if you want to say you live in the *second floor*, you use ordinals. Cardinal numbers are the same as the numbers we use *normally*. Anyway, here are the cardinal numbers in French from 1 to 100:

## Pronunciation of numbers in French

Knowing how to pronounce numbers well is as important as knowing what they are. In this way, we have prepared a table in which you can see the number itself, **the 1 to 20** And how would you have to say them in Spanish so that they sound with a French accent, is that understood? That is, in the following table, **as if you were going to read in spanish**, you say it as is and you will see that it sounds a lot *Frenchy* 😉

We hope you find this resource very useful. Anyway, since only 20 digits are seen, we also have a video with which a person from France will say the numbers out loud. As you will see in the comparison, it is more or less similar, in the end it is about perseverance and practicing and perfecting. Inside video:

## Drill
